By emulating the examples of great personalities of the past, by pondering upon scriptural quotations and anecdotes taught by teachers, by employing all sorts of means, you should be able to develop a deep conviction that this present human body has great potential and that you shall never waste even a single minute of its use.

On the other hand, not taking any essence of this precious human existence, but just wasting it, is almost like taking poison while being fully aware of the consequences of doing so.

It is very wrong for people to feel deeply sad when they lose some money, while when they waste the precious moments of their lives they do not have the slightest feeling of regret. Such an in- difference comes as a result of not realizing the value and rarity of the precious human existence.

Therefore you should determine that on the basis of this precious human existence you have the capability and capacity to under- take the practice of dharma.

“Consciousness is eternal. Its continuity never ceases. But it is not permanent. Permanence refers to the fact that something does not change from moment to moment. And this, of course, consciousness does do. It is impermanent in this sense, but it is still eternal. The continuity of the moment never ceases”.

.. from “The Path to Bliss” by H.H. the Dalai Lama, translated By Geshe Thupten Jinpa.

The Dalai Lama is also well known for being a champion of religious tolerance, and has said “my religion is simple – my religion is kindness”. He looks for the “good heart” in all.

As a world Teacher, His Holiness is a regular visitor to Australia and teaches us to see our lives in a wider context to increase our wisdom and compassion. He speaks about the “oneness of humanity”, reminding us that we each have the power to change our own life for the better, as well as improving the lives of others.

His unique teaching style is exemplified when he is able to reach out to a packed audience of Buddhists and non-Buddhists and make a positive impact on all those present.

The Dalai Lama has written or co-written several world selling books including : The Art of Happiness, Ethics for the New Millennium, Happiness in a Material World, The Transformed Mind, Lighting the Path, The Good Heart, The Spirit of Peace and Widening the Circle of Compassion.

Following an inspirational personal interview with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the early 1980’s, our Teacher, Therese Bottomley, began on a path which has led her to create the Beaumaris Buddhist Centre, seeking to apply Tibetan Buddhism to the contemporary needs of western life.

Weekly introduction classes focus on fundamental basic Buddhist philosophy together with relevant meditation techniques based on the vast teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha.

Regular attendance to these weekly classes may then create opportunities to other classes that extend to more advanced practices. Some of these advanced practices include the highest yoga tantric class of Vajrayogini and Yamantaka. Following the Tibetan tradition, lively discussions and debates are encouraged – all in good humour !

The Centre is located in a south east suburb of Melbourne and the many enthusiastic and friendly students who attend help to create a unique and personal atmosphere. Please feel free to contact us with any enquiries.
